Deadline Extension: Call for Papers

Thanks to all who have submitted their wonderful work for our review thus far. In response to a number of queries and requests over the past few days, we’ve decided to extend our deadline for submissions until TUESDAY JANUARY 17, 2017 (11:59pm). If you only recently heard about our Call for Papers, or if you feel you could use just a bit more time to revise those Fall term papers, please take advantage of this new deadline. We can’t wait to read your essays!

As always, we were very impressed with the outpouring of interest in supporting the publication of IDIOM. Thank you to all who applied for the Editorial Board, and if your application was unsuccessful, you are encouraged to apply again next year. For the remainder of the current academic year, we hope that you will consider engaging with the Journal in other ways, such as submitting a paper of your own academic work for potential publication, or picking up a copy of the forthcoming volume upon release.

2016-2017 Call for Editors

IDIOM, the University of Toronto (St. George) English Undergraduate Academic Journal, is currently seeking new members to join the Editorial Board and assist with the production of the eleventh volume of the journal. Applications are open for the following positions:

  • Five (5) Associate Editors – select and edit submissions of literary criticism for publication in the journal
  • One (1) Managing Editor – moderate all submissions during the selections process

If you are interested in getting involved with IDIOM for the 2016-2017 academic year, please visit the “Apply” section of our website to download an Application Form. Details about the available positions and their respective responsibilities can be found under the  “FAQ” tab on our website.

During the first semester of the academic year, the time commitment expected of the Editorial Board will be relatively light, with the focus on planning and fundraising. The majority of the work will commence in January 2017, once submissions close, and the selections and editing process begins.

The deadline to submit applications for consideration is 11:59pm on Sunday October 9th, 2016.

IDIOM Volume 10: Final Notes

The 2015-2016 Editorial Board wishes to extend thanks to all who took part in the launch of our 10th volume earlier this spring. We had a splendid time and hope you did too!

Physical copies of Volume X are now available free of charge and may be picked up during business hours at the Department of English, located on the 6th floor of the Jackman Humanities Building (170 St. George Street). Alternatively, journal requests and inquiries may be submitted via email to

IDIOM: Volume X Launch

On Thursday, March 31st 2016, IDIOM will be launching its 2015-2016 journal: IDIOM: Volume X. Join us at Hart House as we celebrate the publication of our 10th volume!

The launch will begin at 6:00pm in the Hart House Library with a guest lecture by Canada’s Parliamentary Poet Laureate, George Elliott Clarke. The talk will be followed by a reception in the South Dining Room, where there will be a cash bar and complimentary eatables.

Be sure to take a break from those end-of-term papers and come celebrate with us. We hope to see you there!
